I would plan a field trip to the Columbia Gorge next spring to help with trail repair and replanting after the fire there this month. This photograph was taken a few years ago near the start of the trail to Wahclella Falls, one of my favorite easy gorge hikes. Being back by the falls felt like being in some far off land where either dinosaurs or fairies could show up at any minute – so lush and green and other-worldly. This trail is in the heart of what looks to be the most severely damaged area from the fire, and I can hardly imagine how it looks now – I don’t want to. But if I could plan a trip to help repair the area, that would be time very well spent.
